The Matheran Light Railway connects Neral with the popular hill station of Matheran in Maharashtra.
Construction of the railway began in 1904, and the Neral–Matheran section opened to traffic in 1907.
The approximately 20 km railway uses a narrow 610 mm gauge and climbs from the plains toward Matheran through the forested terrain of the Western Ghats.
The railway helped transform Matheran into an easily accessible hill destination while preserving the town's unusual character as a largely vehicle-restricted hill station.
The route is known for tight curves, mountain scenery and the slow-paced experience traditionally associated with India's historic hill railways.
Matheran Light Railway is not currently part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. It appears on India's Tentative List as part of a proposed extension to the Mountain Railways of India.
