RAC Status Meaning
RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. It is between confirmed and waitlisted status in practical travel terms.
What RAC means
RAC means the passenger has a reserved position, but the final berth may not be fully confirmed yet. It can improve to CNF if cancellations create availability.
In many cases, an RAC passenger can board the train and gets a seat arrangement. A full berth may be allotted later if the status upgrades.
RAC vs waiting list
A waiting list ticket is still waiting for reservation space. RAC is ahead of waiting list because it has a travel-linked reservation position.
The difference is important when checking close to departure. A WL ticket and an RAC ticket should not be treated as the same status.
How RAC can become confirmed
Cancellations, quota adjustments and chart preparation can move RAC passengers to confirmed berths. The movement depends on the train, class, route and date.
If your PNR is RAC, check it again before departure and after chart preparation to see whether a coach and berth have been allotted.
