- Rajdhani Express introduced a new standard of speed, priority and passenger comfort for long-distance travel between the national capital and major Indian cities.
Indian Railways entered a new era of premium long-distance passenger travel in 1969 with the introduction of the New Delhi–Howrah Rajdhani Express.
The Rajdhani concept was designed around faster travel, fewer stops and higher operational priority than ordinary Mail and Express trains.
It also helped establish air-conditioned long-distance railway travel as a premium service.
Following the success of the original service, Rajdhani trains were introduced between New Delhi and several major state capitals and metropolitan cities.
For decades, Rajdhani Express services represented some of the fastest and most prestigious trains operating on Indian Railways.
Their introduction became an important milestone between the traditional long-distance railway era and today's modern premium trains.
