WDG-6G

The WDG-6G is one of the most advanced diesel-electric freight locomotives introduced into Indian Railways and is officially described by RDSO as the most powerful diesel locomotive used by Indian Railways.

The locomotive produces approximately 6,000 gross horsepower from its 16-cylinder GE Evolution Series diesel engine.

The engine is a four-stroke, turbocharged and intercooled unit equipped with electronic fuel injection. It was designed to provide improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared with older generations of Indian diesel locomotives.

The WDG-6G was introduced as part of Indian Railways' locomotive procurement and manufacturing programme with GE Transportation, whose railway business later became part of Wabtec.

These locomotives are associated with the locomotive factory at Marhowra in Bihar.

According to RDSO's WDG-6G handbook, the locomotive has a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a maximum starting tractive effort of approximately 570 kN.

The locomotive also incorporates several modern features that were significant upgrades over older diesel designs. These include remote monitoring and diagnostics, improved crashworthiness, an HVAC-equipped driver's cab, automatic engine start-stop systems and an auxiliary power unit.

The auxiliary systems can reduce unnecessary fuel consumption when the main engine does not need to remain running at full idle.

Despite Indian Railways' rapid electrification programme, diesel locomotives remain useful in particular operational situations and on routes or areas where diesel traction is required.

The WDG-6G therefore represents one of the highest points in the development of diesel traction technology on Indian Railways.
