Head-On Generation (HOG) System

Head-On Generation is an energy-saving technology that allows an electric locomotive to supply power to the passenger coaches it is hauling.

Head-On Generation, commonly called HOG, is an energy-efficient electrical system used by Indian Railways to provide power to passenger coaches.

Traditional End-On Generation trains used diesel-generator-equipped power cars to operate air-conditioning, lighting, fans, charging points and other electrical equipment. These generator cars consumed diesel and produced significant noise and exhaust emissions.

Under HOG, electricity is obtained from the overhead traction supply through the electric locomotive. Special converters in compatible locomotives convert this electrical energy into a form suitable for the coaches.

This reduces dependence on diesel generator sets and lowers fuel consumption, noise and local emissions at railway stations and along the route. Removing or reducing the requirement for conventional generator cars can also make additional coach space available for other purposes.

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works developed a HOG-capable WAP-7 locomotive in 2010, while Indian Railways later expanded HOG conversion across LHB trains on a much larger scale.
