Electrified Route Length

Indian Railways recorded 62,253 electrified route kilometres in 2023–24.

Compared with a total network of 69,181 route kilometres, this meant roughly 90% of the network by route length was electrified at that point.

Electric railway traction can reduce dependence on diesel fuel while supporting powerful locomotives, regenerative braking and improved energy efficiency.

Electrification has expanded particularly rapidly during recent years, fundamentally changing India's locomotive fleet.

As electrification grows, electric locomotives and trainsets are increasingly becoming the dominant form of traction across the broad-gauge railway network.
