Total Route Length

Indian Railways had a total route length of 69,181 kilometres in 2023–24.

Of this network, approximately 66,820 km was Broad Gauge, while 1,159 km was Metre Gauge and 1,202 km was Narrow Gauge.

Route kilometres measure the geographical length of railway routes rather than counting every parallel track separately.

This enormous network connects metropolitan cities, state capitals, industrial centres, ports, towns and remote regions throughout India.

Broad Gauge, measuring 1,676 mm, now dominates the network following decades of gauge conversion and railway modernisation.
