Rani Kamlapati Railway Station

Rani Kamlapati Railway Station in Bhopal represents the modernisation of passenger railway infrastructure in India.

Previously known as Habibganj Railway Station, it was extensively redeveloped before being dedicated to the nation in November 2021.

The Government of India described it as the country's first ISO-certified and first railway station developed through the PPP model.

Its redevelopment focused heavily on passenger circulation and convenience rather than simply renovating the station's appearance.

Important features include a naturally ventilated concourse, separate entry and exit arrangements, free Wi-Fi, digital passenger-information displays and improved connections between platforms through subways. Railway sources have also highlighted seating capacity for hundreds of passengers.

The station has five platforms and operates on the important Delhi–Chennai railway corridor through Bhopal.

Its modern architecture is noticeably different from conventional Indian railway-station design. Large passenger areas, organised circulation and modern facade treatments give the station an appearance frequently compared with an airport terminal.

The station was renamed in honour of Rani Kamlapati, associated with the Gond heritage of the Bhopal region.

Rani Kamlapati Station has also become an important reference point for India's broader railway station redevelopment programme. Railway authorities have used experience from projects including Rani Kamlapati, Gandhinagar Capital and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal while developing newer station-modernisation programmes.

It therefore deserves recognition not because of an unusual platform length or altitude, but because it represents the future-oriented redesign of Indian passenger railway stations.
