Vande Bharat Express: The New Face of Modern Indian Rail Travel

The Vande Bharat Express has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the modernization of Indian Railways. Designed as a modern self-propelled trainset, it offers passengers a combination of faster acceleration, improved comfort and advanced onboard technology.

One of its important characteristics is distributed propulsion. Instead of relying only on a conventional locomotive pulling passenger coaches, traction equipment is distributed throughout the trainset. This enables improved acceleration and helps reduce journey times on suitable routes.

According to the Ministry of Railways, Vande Bharat trains are designed for semi-high-speed operation of up to 160 km/h, subject to the permitted speed of the railway section on which they operate.

Passenger facilities include automatic plug doors, sealed gangways, mobile charging sockets, modern lighting, CCTV cameras and ergonomic seating. Executive-class coaches can also feature revolving seats. Emergency communication systems and other safety equipment have been incorporated into the train design.

The trains are also equipped with Kavach, Indian Railways’ indigenous automatic train-protection technology, on supported operations and infrastructure.

Beyond speed alone, Vande Bharat represents a broader transformation of rail travel in India—one focused on improved passenger experience, faster intercity connectivity and modern railway technology.

As the network expands, Vande Bharat has increasingly become associated with a new generation of Indian train travel.
