The figure included approximately 5,774 EMU services, 4,111 Mail and Express trains, and 3,313 ordinary passenger and mixed trains.
The statistics include different types of passenger operation and also include Metro Railway Kolkata in the relevant official tables.
These services range from short urban commuter journeys to long-distance trains covering thousands of kilometres.
The figure provides a useful indication of the enormous operational complexity required to coordinate passenger trains every day across India's railway network.
