Freight transportation is one of the largest and most economically important activities of Indian Railways.
During 2023–24, revenue-earning freight traffic reached 1,588.06 million tonnes, or approximately 1.588 billion tonnes.
Coal alone accounted for approximately 786.84 million tonnes, almost half of the recorded revenue-earning freight traffic.
Other important commodities included iron ore, cement, steel products, containers, fertilisers, petroleum products and food grains.
Indian Railways also generated approximately 974 billion net tonne kilometres of freight transportation during the year.
The freight network plays a vital role in supplying power plants, industries, ports, manufacturing centres and markets throughout India.
