Passenger transportation is one of the most visible and important activities of Indian Railways.
During the financial year 2023–24, Indian Railways recorded approximately ₹70,693.33 crore in passenger earnings.
Passenger revenue comes from different railway travel categories, including suburban services, ordinary passenger trains, Mail and Express trains and premium passenger services.
During the same financial year, Indian Railways recorded approximately 6.905 billion passenger journeys, showing the enormous scale of railway travel across the country.
Revenue varies considerably between passenger categories. Long-distance reserved travel and air-conditioned classes generally generate higher earnings per passenger than suburban and ordinary unreserved services.
Passenger earnings help support the operation and maintenance of trains, stations, coaches and other railway infrastructure while contributing to the overall financial performance of Indian Railways.
The 2023–24 passenger earnings figure was higher than the previous financial year, reflecting continued recovery and growth in railway passenger traffic.
