Total Coaches

Indian Railways had a total coaching stock of 91,948 units in 2023–24.

This overall figure includes several types of passenger and coaching vehicles rather than only conventional locomotive-hauled passenger coaches.

The recorded stock included 66,687 passenger carriages, 13,022 other coaching vehicles, 12,229 EMU and MEMU coaches and a small number of rail cars.

India's passenger rolling-stock fleet includes conventional coaches, LHB coaches, suburban EMUs, MEMUs, DEMUs and newer trainsets.

This enormous fleet supports passenger operations ranging from short suburban commutes to multi-day long-distance journeys.
