Total Freight Wagons

Indian Railways recorded 327,991 freight wagons during 2023–24.

Freight wagons are specially designed for transporting commodities such as coal, iron ore, steel, cement, petroleum products, fertilisers, food grains and containers.

Different wagon designs are used depending on the material being transported.

Open wagons are particularly important for bulk commodities such as coal and ore, while covered wagons protect goods requiring greater protection from weather.

The enormous wagon fleet highlights the critical role Indian Railways plays in India's freight and industrial logistics system.
